GREEN RIVER FIREFIGHTERS ASSOCIATION
WHO ARE WE? The Green River Firefighters Association is made up of the 76 fire departments serving the Green River Region. The Association serves the counties of Union, Henderson, Webster, Daviess, McLean, Muhlenberg, Ohio and Hancock.
WHAT IS OUR MISSION? The Green River Firefighters Association is an organization that seeks to enhance educational opportunities for emergency responders, support fire department public safety education efforts, and provide communications between departments throughout the Green River Region.
HOW OLD ARE WE? The Green River Firefighters Association was formed in 1984 and has continued to grow both in quality and amount of services and resources each year since its creation.
WHAT ARE SOME OF OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS?
SPECIALIZED SCHOOLS: The Association hosts Kentucky's Fire Service Officers School each February. This school now has attendance of over 900 officers representing over 275 fire departments from throughout Kentucky. The Association also hosts the Spring Fire School which provides intense hands on training in a variety of fire suppression and technical rescue subjects.
MOBILE TRAINING UNITS: The Association provides three mobile education units. Two of these units, the Smoke Maze and the Burn Trailer, are designed for firefighter training. The third, the Safety House, is designed for educating children on prevention of and preparation for fire related emergencies.
OTHER SERVICES: The Association provides a blood bank, , providing access to a blood supply for firefighters and their families, a video training library to assist fire departments with in-house training, and video editing library that allows fire departments to produce their own videos.
WHERE ARE WE BASED OUT OF? Headquarters for the Association is the Area 3 Training Center, located on Highway 136 East, one mile east of Calhoun. This facility provides us with two buildings, one a multi-purpose class room and office building and the other being a storage building, and 1.7 acres of land for staging of mobile training units.
DO WE HAVE PAID STAFF? There are no paid staff members of the Green River Firefighters Association. Kentucky's State Fire Rescue Training program assists the Association with their paid personnel in the scheduling, operation and maintenance of our mobile training fleet. The Association depends on countless hours of volunteer labor from the members of individual fire departments throughout the region to accomplish its mission.
WHERE DO OUR LEADERS COME FROM? During the 15 year history of the Green River Firefighters Association, the leadership of the Association has come:
from the largest of departments, such as Owensboro Fire Department,
from the smallest of departments, such as the Rockport Fire Department,
from career fire departments, such as the Henderson Fire Department,
from volunteer fire departments, such as McLean County Fire Department,
from the east side of the region at the Hawesville Fire Department,
from the west side of the region at the Sturgis Fire Department,
and many places in between.
Throughout the history of many leaders with a vast variety of experiences, all have been focused on the mission of promotion education of firefighters and the citizens they protect.
