12-23-04 Jason Todd Rowe, Chief of the Elkhorn City Fire Department in Pike County, was killed during a training exercise at their fire station. They were practicing lifting a truck with air bags. Either the truck or the air bags shifted and one of the air bags propelled toward and striking Chief Rowe. Rowe, age 30, had been Chief for some seven years and had grown up in the Department beginning as an explorer.
12-11-04 It appears, from several reports, that New York Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik has withdrawn his name from consideration for the position of Secretary of Homeland Security. Kerik notified President Bush in an 8:30 EST PM call. No response from President Bush on who the next recommendation will be.
01-02-04 The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration has released preliminary figures for miners killed on the job in 2003. The number in all types of mines is 55, down from 67 in 2002. Kentucky had the second highest coal mine deaths, with a total of eight. This was down from nine in 2002.
