Applicant,
This letter will
outline the requirements for the EMT Basic course. Please read it carefully as
there are important details found within the letter. Questions not answered
within this letter should be directed towards Jimmy VanCleve-Program
Coordinator for the EMT Training program. Contact information can be found at
the end of this letter.
AREA 3 FIRE RESCUE TRAINING EMT-BASIC COURSE:
The Lead
Instructors for the EMT-Basic course will be Danny Froehlich and Leigh Ann Van
Cleve. The course will be conducted at KCTCS –
SCHEDULE:
The course is ran on
a semester schedule: ie. Fall semester class will begin the 1st week of school
in August and finish the second week of December and the Spring course will
begin the first week of classes in January and finish during finals week in May. The weeknight classes scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday nights will start at
6:00pm and end at 9:00pm. The Saturday classes will be 8 hours in duration and
begin at 8:00am with a 30-minute dinner break about noon.
PASS / FAIL CRITERIA:
The EMT student
will need to score an average of 75% on the written examinations throughout the
class. There will be 6 written examinations consisting of 100 questions each.
EMT Students MUST achieve a passing score on 4 of the 6 written exams
throughout the course. Failure of more than 2 exams during the course will be
grounds for immediate dismissal from the course. The EMT student will not be
allowed to miss more than 18 hours of this course. Skill competencies will be
evaluated throughout the course as well as workbook completion and work ethics.
Further explanation of the grading scale will be presented on the first night
of the course.
CREDIT FOR
THE COURSE:
KCTCS - State Fire
Rescue Training will award 6 college credit hours upon successful completion of
the course. After successful completion of the practical and written
certification exams, the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services will
award certification as an EMT Basic. The National Registry of Emergency Medical
Technicians will provide registration as an EMT Basic.
CERTIFICATION:
The certification
examinations are given separately from this course. Successful completion of
this course will allow you to participate in the certification process.
Successful completion of this course does not guarantee that you will pass the
certification tests.
COST OF THE COURSE:
The tuition will be
aligned with the KCTCS tuition fee schedule. The Owensboro Community and

At the end of the
course, there will be additional fees related to Certifications from both the
NREMT and the KBEMS. Those fees will be approximately $105.00 (see below).
The breakdown of
these fees is as follows:
Application fee -
$10.00 (KBEMS) due the first night of class
Certification fee -
$25.00 (KBEMS) due the final night of class
Examination fee -
$50.00 (KBEMS) due the final night of class
NREMT Exam -
$20.00 (NREMT) due the final night of class
The basis for the
fees to the KBEMS may be found listed in 202 KAR 7:030.
REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION:
Requirements for
certification are set forth in 202 KAR 7:301.
Each applicant
shall:
-
understand, read, speak and write the English language with a comprehension and
performance level equal to at least the ninth grade of education
-
not currently be subject to disciplinary action pursuant to KRS 311A that would
prevent certification
-
hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or learners permit
- be at least 18 years of age
-
hold a high school diploma or GED
-
complete an EMT Basic course taught using the DOT 1994 NSC.
-
obtain NREMT registration as a NREMT-B within 2 years of completion of the
course
-
submit a completed and signed “Emergency Medical Technician Initial
Certification Application”
-
present written evidence of completion of current HIV/AIDS training required by
KRS 311A.110
-
pay the fee required by 202 KAR 7:030
-
present written evidence of completion of current training in CPR

State Fire Rescue Training will provide the application for the student to fill out and submit it with the application fee provided by the student within the first week of training. The student should provide a copy of their driver’s license and high school diploma or GED to the course instructor by the first night of the class. The HIV/AIDS course and the CPR course will be provided as part of the EMT training curriculum and subsequent certificates will be issued.

FINANCIAL AID
If you feel that
you may be qualified to receive financial aid for this training, you will need
to contact the financial aid office at the Owensboro Community and Technical
College as soon as possible so the application and testing process can take
place prior to the start of class. (Financial
aid for EMT students is available only to students that have declared a major
in Fire Rescue).
